It comes down to three things: the age of the appliance, the cost of the repair compared with a comparable new model, and the condition of the rest of the machine. Once the technician has diagnosed the problem, we walk you through those numbers plainly. If a repair doesn't make financial sense, we'll say so before any work is done.

It does over time. Valley tap water comes from Lake Mead and is very hard, so minerals build up wherever water is heated or sits still. That shows up as scale on dishwasher heating elements and spray arms, clogged inlet screens on washers, refrigerator water filters that need changing more often, and ice makers that slow down or stop. Many of these problems are repairable, and some can be prevented with regular filter changes and cleaning.

Most household refrigerators and freezers are designed for room temperatures well below what an attached Las Vegas garage reaches in July. When the air around the unit is that hot, the compressor runs almost nonstop, and desert dust on the condenser coils makes it worse. A technician can check the coils, fans, door seals and controls, and tell you whether the unit is rated for garage use at all.
