In-Home Repair Across the Las Vegas Valley

Houses, Condos, Rentals & Garages

Ice makers live or die by their water supply. Water this hard leaves scale on fill valves, molds and evaporators, which slows production and causes small, hollow or cloudy ice. We repair built-in refrigerator ice makers, undercounter and clear-ice machines, nugget ice makers and commercial ice machines. Descaling and water filtration are part of the diagnosis, and we use genuine OEM parts when available.

Hard water and ice makers: start here

The valley's tap water comes from the Colorado River by way of Lake Mead, and it is very hard: roughly 16 to 18 grains per gallon, or about 280 to 300 parts per million. The U.S. Geological Survey considers anything over 180 milligrams per liter very hard. For most of the house that means spotty glasses and crusty faucets. For an ice maker, it means minerals are deposited at every point where water stops, freezes or evaporates.

Scale shows up in a few predictable places. The small mesh screen inside the water inlet valve catches sediment and mineral flakes until the flow slows to a trickle. The refrigerator's water filter loads up faster than the calendar suggests. In standalone undercounter ice machines, a chalky white layer builds on the evaporator plate and in the water reservoir, which slows ice harvest and makes cubes cloudy, thin or hollow. Managing hard water is the single biggest factor in keeping an ice maker running here.

Two kinds of ice makers

Most homes have a refrigerator ice maker: a module in the freezer or, on many French-door models, in the fresh-food door. Water flows from the house supply through a filter and an electric inlet valve, travels up a small fill tube into a mold, freezes, and is pushed or twisted out into the bin. A feeler arm, bail wire or optical sensor tells the module when the bin is full.

Undercounter and freestanding ice machines are a different animal. They make ice on a refrigerated plate or grid, use a water pump and reservoir, and often have their own drain line or drain pump. Clear-ice and nugget-ice machines fall into this group. They produce better ice but need regular cleaning and descaling to keep working, and they are more sensitive to room temperature because their condenser has to reject heat into the cabinet or room.

Heat matters for this second group. Ice production ratings are usually quoted at moderate room and water temperatures, and output drops noticeably as either rises. An undercounter machine in a backyard kitchen or a covered patio bar faces summer air well over 100 degrees and supply water that has been sitting in sun-warmed pipes. Many indoor models are not rated for outdoor installation at all, so check the manual before blaming a part for slow ice in July.

What each symptom usually points to

No ice at all: first confirm the ice maker is switched on and the bail arm is down. Then check whether the freezer is cold enough; most refrigerator ice makers need the freezer around 0 to 5 degrees F to cycle. If the dispenser also gives no water, the problem is upstream: a closed supply valve, a kinked line behind the refrigerator, a clogged filter, a frozen fill tube or a failed inlet valve. If water dispenses fine but no ice is made, the ice maker module, its thermostat or the fill tube is the likely cause.

Small, hollow or crescent-shaped cubes: low water flow. A partly clogged filter, a scaled inlet screen, low household water pressure or a self-piercing saddle valve that has narrowed over time are common reasons. Most inlet valves require a minimum supply pressure listed in the installation manual.

Ice that clumps or melts into a solid block: the freezer is warming and rewarming, the dispenser chute flap is not sealing, or a door is not closing completely. In-door ice makers on some models are prone to frost buildup around the ice compartment, which can jam the auger.

Water leaking or ice forming under the module: an overfill from a leaking inlet valve, a cracked fill cup, or a refrigerator that is not level so water spills from the mold.

Bad-tasting or cloudy ice: an old filter, ice that has sat in the bin for weeks absorbing freezer odors, or scale and biofilm in an undercounter machine that is overdue for cleaning.

Homeowner checks and simple maintenance

Replace the refrigerator water filter on schedule, typically about every six months, and sooner if flow drops. After installing a new filter, run a few gallons through the dispenser and discard the first batches of ice to clear air and carbon fines.

Look behind the refrigerator for a kinked supply line, and make sure the shutoff valve is fully open. If you have a self-piercing saddle valve, consider having it replaced with a proper quarter-turn shutoff; many manufacturers recommend against saddle valves because they clog and leak.

A frozen fill tube is common when the freezer runs very cold or the inlet valve drips. With the refrigerator unplugged, you can thaw the tube with a hair dryer on low held at a safe distance, keeping it away from the water and from plastic parts that could warp. If it refreezes within days, the inlet valve may be leaking.

For undercounter ice machines, follow the manufacturer's cleaning schedule, which in hard-water areas may mean more frequent descaling than the minimum. Use only the cleaner the manufacturer specifies; many evaporators are nickel-plated, and harsh acids or vinegar can damage the plating.

Unplug the appliance before reaching into the ice maker area. The ejector and auger mechanisms can start without warning, and some modules have a heater that warms the mold during harvest.

How a technician diagnoses and repairs it

We start with the model and serial number, then work through the system in order: supply pressure at the valve, flow through the filter, inlet valve operation and its screen, fill tube, the module's harvest cycle and the freezer temperature. Many refrigerator ice makers have a test mode that forces a harvest cycle, which quickly shows whether the module, the water supply or the freezer temperature is at fault.

Typical repairs include replacing the water inlet valve, the ice maker module or its sensor, a dispenser auger motor, a door switch, or a frozen or cracked water line. On undercounter machines, repairs may include descaling, replacing the water pump, a water level sensor, a drain pump, or a thermistor that controls the harvest cycle.

Repair is usually worthwhile when the refrigerator itself is healthy, since ice maker parts are a small share of the appliance's value. For an older refrigerator that also has cooling or sealed-system issues, or a countertop ice maker that is inexpensive to replace, a technician can help you weigh whether a repair makes sense.

Making ice makers last in a hard-water home

A whole-home water softener protects ice makers, but note that softened water tastes slightly salty to some people and some manufacturers recommend against using it in clear-ice machines; check your manual. A point-of-use filter on the refrigerator line or under the sink can remove sediment and chlorine taste. Neither removes the need to change the refrigerator's own filter on schedule.

If your ice maker has stopped, or the ice has turned small, cloudy or bad-tasting, call or book online. Same-day appointments are available when booked early, and repairs carry a 90-day parts and 30-day labor warranty.
