LG, also based in South Korea, is known for its inverter direct-drive washer motors, linear and inverter linear refrigerator compressors, InstaView door-in-door refrigerators, TrueSteam dishwashers, and ThinQ app control. We diagnose LG appliances by model and serial number, using the unit's error codes and component tests to separate a failing linear compressor from a control or sensor fault. Genuine LG OEM parts are used when available.

Direct drive, linear compressors and a self-diagnosing design
LG, the South Korean electronics maker, made two engineering choices that shape nearly every repair on its appliances. Its washers use a direct-drive motor, where the rotor is bolted to the drum shaft with no belt or transmission. Many of its refrigerators use a linear compressor, in which the piston is driven back and forth by a magnetic field rather than a crankshaft. Both designs cut noise and energy use. Both also change what a symptom means.
On a direct-drive washer, a grinding noise or a drum that won't spin isn't a belt or clutch, because there isn't one. The suspects are the drum bearings, the rotor and stator, the hall-effect sensor that reads rotor position, or the motor control board. On a linear-compressor refrigerator, a warm fridge with a running fan isn't automatically low refrigerant. The compressor and its inverter board have to be tested together.
LG also builds in diagnostics. Many models support Smart Diagnosis, which transmits data through a phone or the ThinQ app, and most display alphanumeric codes. They're good starting points, but they describe what the board measured, not which part failed.
The linear compressor question
LG's linear compressors have been the subject of consumer class actions. A settlement covered certain LG refrigerators bought between 2014 and 2017, and a newer suit over later LG and LG-built Kenmore models has been in the courts. LG denied that the refrigerators are defective. LG has also advertised extended parts coverage on its compressors, and the length and terms have varied by model and purchase date. If an LG fridge stops cooling, check your paperwork before paying for a sealed-system repair.
Typical signs of a compressor problem are a fridge and freezer that both warm while the compressor is silent or clicks without running, or a compressor that runs constantly while the evaporator stays warm. Before blaming the compressor, a technician should rule out the inverter board, the start circuit, and a condenser choked with dust. Each produces similar symptoms and is far less costly to fix.
Sealed-system work on a linear compressor needs proper refrigerant handling and brazing. It's never an owner job.
Codes and common faults across LG's range
LG washers: OE is a drain fault, usually the pump filter, the hose or the pump itself, which is a known wear part. IE is a fill fault, often closed valves or scaled inlet screens. UE is an unbalanced load. LE points at the motor circuit, whether a locked rotor, a failed hall sensor or a wiring problem. dE is a door-lock issue, and PE involves the water-level pressure sensor. A loose or chattering drum under load often means the rear bearings are going.
LG dryers report airflow problems as d80, d90 or d95 on many models, meaning the vent is roughly 80, 90 or 95 percent restricted. That makes it a vent problem, not a dryer problem, and it shouldn't be ignored. LG refrigerators show codes such as Er IF (ice-maker fan), Er FF (freezer fan) and Er dH (defrost heater circuit); a frost-locked evaporator from a failed defrost is common on many models. LG dishwashers use OE and IE much like the washers, and AE or E1 for a leak detected in the base. LG ranges lean on oven temperature sensors, igniters and control boards, the same as most brands.
Hard water, dust and heat: the valley-specific angle
Valley water is very hard, around 16 to 18 grains per gallon, and LG's door-dispenser ice makers and steam features feel it. Scale builds in the dispenser water valve's inlet screen and in steam-generator lines on SteamFresh and TrueSteam models, cutting flow until the board throws a fill or steam fault. Using the correct filter and running any descaling cycle the manual specifies helps.
For LG dryers, the d80 to d95 codes deserve particular respect here. Lint plus fine desert dust packs long vent runs in two-story homes and condo stacks, and a restricted vent raises drying temperatures and fire risk. For LG refrigerators, garage installs and dusty condensers push a variable-speed compressor to run longer and hotter, which is exactly the duty you don't want on an expensive component. Monsoon storms add power events that inverter boards don't love.
What an owner can safely check
Write down the code and note when it appears: during fill, drain, spin or at start-up. For washers and dishwashers, open the water valves fully and clean the drain-pump filter with the machine unplugged. For an LG dryer showing a flow-sense code, disconnect the vent from the dryer and run a timed dry. If the code clears, the vent needs cleaning. Use Smart Diagnosis or ThinQ if your model supports it, and save the result for the technician.
For a warm refrigerator, check that the doors seal, the vents inside aren't blocked, and the condenser fan at the back is turning. Leave compressor, refrigerant and board testing to a professional.
Parts supply and when LG repairs pay off
Pumps, valves, sensors, door locks, bearings kits, fans and ice-maker assemblies for LG are generally easy to get. Compressors, inverter boards and some model-specific parts can take longer, and compressor jobs need scheduling for sealed-system work. Matching the full model number is essential, because LG uses many sub-variants.
Most LG washer, dryer and dishwasher repairs are worth doing if the cabinet and tub are sound. A refrigerator compressor failure is the tough call. Coverage status, the age of the unit and its overall condition all matter. We're an independent repair service, not affiliated with LG. Warranty work on a unit still under manufacturer warranty should go through LG first.
