Fisher & Paykel is a New Zealand appliance maker owned by Haier since 2012. It invented the DishDrawer two-drawer dishwasher and makes ActiveSmart refrigerators, integrated column refrigeration, laundry and cooking appliances. We repair Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers, refrigerators and laundry, diagnosing by model and serial number. DishDrawers have their own lid, seal and motor systems unlike a standard dishwasher, so we test each drawer separately. Genuine OEM parts are used when available.

Why Fisher & Paykel needs its own playbook
Fisher & Paykel was founded in New Zealand in 1934 and has been owned by Haier since 2012. Its appliances share a design habit: rethinking the standard layout rather than refining it. The DishDrawer, which the company introduced in the late 1990s, splits a dishwasher into one or two independent drawers. Its refrigerators use the ActiveSmart system, which adjusts cooling based on how the fridge is being used. Its laundry and cooking lines lean on electronic controls and modular assemblies rather than on mechanical switches.
The practical effect is that a technician who approaches a Fisher & Paykel like a generic machine will often get it wrong. A DishDrawer has no door and no fixed tub; the wash tub moves, and its lid has to seal against it every cycle. A fault that would point to a pump on a conventional dishwasher can point to a lid seal or a cable on a DishDrawer. Diagnosis starts by reading the machine's own fault history, then working through the design rather than around it.
DishDrawer dishwashers and hard water
The DishDrawer's most common complaints are leaks, failure to start, and poor cleaning. Leaks often trace to the lid seal or to the tub seal where the drawer meets the chassis. The drawer is connected to the cabinet by a flexible power and water cable assembly that flexes every time it opens, and wear in that assembly can cause intermittent electrical faults. Error codes on the control panel narrow the area down, and many models will display a fault number after a cycle aborts; we read those against the service documentation for that model rather than guessing.
Hard water is a real factor here. Las Vegas Valley water runs at roughly 16 to 18 grains per gallon, and scale builds on the heating element, the filter plate and the spray arm jets. On drawer machines, where the wash volume is small, a partially blocked spray arm shows up quickly as gritty, filmy dishes. Use the rinse aid, run a dishwasher descaler periodically, and keep the filter clean; if the model has a water softener setting, set it for very hard water.
ActiveSmart refrigerators and freezers
Fisher & Paykel refrigerators rely on sensors and variable-speed components, so temperature complaints are usually about information rather than raw cooling power. A failed thermistor, an evaporator fan that slows or stops, or a defrost system that is not completing can all produce a warm fresh-food section while the freezer looks fine. Ice makers and water dispensers on these models are vulnerable to the valley's mineral load: a clogged water filter or a scaled inlet valve screen slows the fill, and the ice maker produces small or hollow cubes or stops.
Built-in and integrated column models are installed into cabinetry with tight tolerances. When the ventilation path at the top or toe-kick is blocked, or a garage or patio installation sees summer ambient temperatures well above the unit's design range, the compressor runs long and the fridge struggles. Clearing the vent path and cleaning the condenser area is a legitimate first fix.
Washers, dryers and the cooking line
Fisher & Paykel washers use direct-drive motors with electronic control rather than belts and transmissions. When a washer refuses to spin or stops mid-cycle, the cause is often the lid or door lock, an out-of-balance load sensor reading, or a drain blockage, not the motor itself. Clogged inlet screens from mineral-heavy water cause slow fills and fill errors. On dryers, lint and desert dust in long vent runs cause overheating, tripped thermal protection and long dry times; clean the lint screen every load and the full vent at least once a year.
On cooking, Fisher & Paykel ranges, wall ovens, cooktops and microwaves share the usual failure points: igniters and spark modules on gas burners, temperature sensors and elements on electric ovens, cooling fans, and door locks on self-cleaning ovens. Induction cooktops are electronic appliances first, and a burner that refuses to recognize cookware or throws a fault code may have a failed board section or an overheating issue from a blocked cooling path beneath the cooktop.
What owners can safely check
On a DishDrawer, remove and rinse the filter, check that nothing is catching on the lid as it closes, and run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner. On a refrigerator, change the water filter on schedule, confirm the vents are not blocked by food, and clear dust from the toe-kick grille with the power off. On laundry, clean the inlet screens if you can reach them safely with the water off, and check the dryer vent hood outside for lint buildup. Unplug the appliance before removing panels, and leave sealed-system and high-voltage work to a technician.
Parts and the repair decision
Fisher & Paykel parts are handled through a specialist channel. Core components such as DishDrawer seals, pumps, filters, refrigerator sensors and fans are generally available, but some model-specific boards and assemblies can take time. Matching by model and serial number is essential because revisions within a model line are common.
Repair is usually worthwhile on built-in refrigeration and on cooking equipment with a sound cavity, because their replacement involves cabinetry. A DishDrawer is often worth repairing once, but a drawer machine with repeated electronic faults across different assemblies may be at the end of its useful life. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Fisher & Paykel; units still under warranty should go through Fisher & Paykel's authorized service network first.
